
The Ministry of Education allocates around RD$375 million every year to non-government organizations, most of which are unrelated to education, reports Diario Libre. The newspaper looks into the funds allotted to the foundations that have the names of the late politicians – Joaquin Balaguer, Juan Bosch and Jose Francisco Peña Gomez. The investigative report mentions the weak accountability of these foundations regarding the use of the funding.
The Diario Libre report says that 164 ONGs receive RD$228 million from the Ministry of Education. Diario Libre reports that RD$53.2 million is allocated to religious organizations in the Ministry of Education budget. So far this year, the Ministry of Education has spent RD$6.2 million to pay for electricity service of the Archbishop of Santo Domingo as per instructions received from the Ministry of Energy & Mines and the Ministry of Hacienda, Diario Libre reports. Dozens of Catholic schools operate in alliance with the public school system.
