Thief walks away with valuable Ivan Tovar drawing

All the promotion around the value of the works of late Dominican surrealism painter Ivan Tovar seemingly has produced a taker. Since early April, the country’s first immersive experience promotes in 3D the works of Ivan Tovar, the painter and sculptor who made a name for himself in Paris, France and thanks to the exhibition, is becoming well known among Dominicans.

An unknown thief walked into the Casas Reales Museum where a drawing of the famous painter was on exhibit and stole the drawing. The museum is steps away from the mega exhibition in Plaza España. It was later known there was hardly any security at the Casas Reales Museum to protect the valuable drawing. The Police is now investigating.

Listin Diario reports that the stolen work was a small pencil drawing on paper that was part of the exhibit on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Tovar’s birthdate. Also exhibited at the museum are 70 other sketches. Only one, “Pencil on Paper” was taken. The theft would have taken place on last Tuesday or Wednesday (19-20 April 2022), when the drawing was noticed missing.

The Police suspect it was an inside job, as reported in Diario Libre. The drawing belongs to a private collector.

The Immersive Experience: Ivan Tovar is ongoing through 6 June 2022 at the Plaza España venue.
