
Academia used its pull and worked for the collective good. On Monday, 25 April 2022 in the evening, the rector of the Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE), Isaac García de la Cruz and the director of the extension of the state university, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Miguel Medina Liriano, met with representatives of the Colectivo de Organizaciones Populares (Falpo), headed by its leader José Mercado, and the strike organizer agreed to end the protest in its first of two days. In the meeting, Diego Hidalgo represented the business community that was also against the shutdown.
San Francisco de Macoris returned to normal on Tuesday, 26 April morning after the Colectivo de Organizaciones Populares decided to end the general strike they had unilaterally convened. The strike organizers had called for a 48-hour strike, with the threat of vandalism for those who opened. This primarily affected small businesses and schools closed.
On the other hand, merchants and other businesses in San Francisco de Macoris had warned that on Tuesday, 26 April their businesses would open, understanding that the strike ended yesterday, Monday. The same occurred for Santiago, the country’s second-largest city.
“We are reaching an agreement that guarantees that the authorities will listen to our needs and we call on them to respond within one month to the previously signed agreements and to today’s agreement,” explained the strike leader, Jose Mercado.
