Presidential advisor Maria Altagracia de los Angeles (Angelita) Peña Peña tweeted about how poorly dressed many TV reporters and TV hosts are today. Her tweet set off a series of comments in pro and against the care TV journalists give to how they look.
Peña is an advisor to the Government and Strategy Agency of the Executive Branch. Many people were bothered, while others acquiesced that there is some truth in what she implied: that media people should are about image, and they should look good at all times.
The tweet: “The channels should take a little more care of the image of their news reporters and news anchors…..caramba!!! How many ugly and poorly dressed people on TV.”
In her opinion, TV people need to take care of their appearance. She said she made the remark after observing the poorly dressed reporters covering the Book Fair for TV stations.
Later on a Zol 106.5 FM talk show, Peña added to defend her tweet: “There is no justification for any reporter to be reporting news for TV dressed as if he were a ‘reggaetonero’ wearing a pair of pants that show his undershorts back there.” She said the tweet was motivated by the attire of some TV journalists covering the Santo Domingo book fair.
She did apologize to those bothered by her tweet. “If someone felt offended because they understood that I was saying it pejoratively, “I am truly sorry.”
First Lady Raquel Arbaje and Vice President Raquel Peña had spoken up earlier to defend the media. First Lady Arbaje had said Peña was not in government and did not represent the official opinion on the looks of the press. She had to tweet later saying that she was wrong and Peña was employed in government.
