A delegation from the Dominican Port Authority was in Miami, Florida last week to participate in Seatrade Cruise Global, the yearly event that serves the cruise industry worldwide.
At the event, the Dominican delegation pitched its plans to add new ports to receive cruise ships. Today, ports in Puerto Plata, La Romana and Santo Domingo receive cruise ship passengers at Puerto Plata’s Amber Cove and Taino Bay, La Romana-Casa de Campo, and Santo Domingo’s Sans Souci.
The newest, Taino Bay in Puerto Plata reports 210,000 passengers on board 95 ships have visited in its first four months in operation.
The ports that are planned are those of Pedernales and Barahona in the southwest, and Arroyo Barril in Samana Peninsula on the northeast coast. It might be remembered that Arroyo Barril was once a port for exporting pineapples to the Caribbean, but the damage caused to the local marine life (humpback whales) was such that the Dole Company withdrew the exports. Cruise ships, on the other hand, may actually consider whale watching as an attraction for its guests and is likely to take all the necessary precautions.
