It is a normal spring time weather phenomenon. Now, meteorologist, Jean Suriel tells Dominicans that it is here again. The diffuse cloud of fine sand, dirt and dust that flies over from the vast desert area in North Africa pushes westward over the Atlantic Ocean at altitudes of 5,000 to 15,000 feet above sea level
On the positive side, the Saharan Air Level is an inhibitor of tropical storm development as it dries out the excessive moisture that feeds cyclones.
Dust often acts to inhibit tropical development.
On the negative side, it brings congestion and exacerbates the conditions of those who suffer from allergies. It also brings haze that replaces the otherwise blue skies of the Caribbean.
