11 DR medical schools accredited in US

The Ministry of Superior Education (Mescyt) announced 11 medical schools at Dominican universities have been accredited to receive foreign students. Superior Education Minister Franklin García Fermín said this means foreign students can access loans in the United States to study here. He made the announcement during an interview for the Corripio Media Group.

García Fermín said the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) of the US Department of Education’s Department of Medical School Education certified that the 11 universities meet the required quality standards.

The universities include: Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Universidad Iberoamericana, Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo. Also the Universidad Nordestana, Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago, Universidad Católica Tecnológica del Cibao and Universidad Central del Este.

García Fermín said the Ministry is increasing from RD$220 million to RD$338 million the scientific research grants to universities. The grants have helped researchers to obtain patents.

He mentioned the Ministry is backing PHd programs at the universities, working with world class universities. He mentioned 65 doctoral candidates have benefited with scholarships under a program with the Embassy of France in the country.

García Fermín explained the Mescyt is carrying out the five-year assessment of 52 universities by their international peers and the accreditation plan is underway for some 20. Another 30 will be completed by the end of the year.

He said international scholarships are being awarded in areas of priority to the country – agriculture, physics and mathematics, included. Some 8,000 national and foreign scholarships are available.
