Re-run of Tokyo Olympic 400m final goes to Marileidy Paulino in Diamond League

In the Tokyo Olympics (August 2021), Marileidy Paulino stunned the world of track and field with a second place finish in the women’s 400m race. She lost to Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo. Winning her first Olympic medal, Paulino returned to the Dominican Republic as a national heroine.

Paulino joined the best in the world in track and field that met last week at the World Athletics Diamond League Doha (Qatar) 2022. The league is the PGA Tour for track and field. During the event, Paulino avenged her loss to Miller-Uibo, this time taking the 400m in a time of 51.20 in a windy field. Miller-Uibo was third, with a time of 51.84. Second place went to Jamaica’s Stephanie-Ann McPherson, who had a time of 51.69.

Seven reigning Olympic champions and a host of Olympic and world medallists competed at the Qatar Sports Club track in Doha.

The first place wins US$10,000 in prize money for Paulino. The final of the Diamond League series of events comes with a US$30,000 cash award.

There are 13 competitions on the Diamond League World Athletics program. The next competition is set for 21 May in Birmingham (London), followed by 28 May 2022 in Eugene, USA, 5 June in Rabat, Morocco and 9 June in Rome, Italy.
