
The government division that handles reservoirs in the Dominican Republic, EGEHID called for the provisional suspension of the use of boats and jet skis in dams nationwide.
The Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHID) ordered the provisional suspension, as of Wednesday, 18 May 2022, of sports and recreational activities carried out in motorized water vehicles in the reservoirs of the dams under its administration, until the drafting and implementation of a provisional protocol for the safe use of these spaces is concluded.
The purpose of the measure is to guarantee the safety of all the citizens who visit these areas. The protocol seeks to ensure a correct use of the lakes of the dams as scenarios for ecotourism activities. The measures under study will covers the use of boats, motorboats, yachts and jet skis for sport or recreational use. Boats used for transporting people are excluded from the suspension, provided they comply with safety protocols.
The EGEHID is summoning the public and private sectors, including local restaurants and water sports associations, among other interest groups involved, to reach a consensus on the definitive “Protocol for the safe use of reservoirs or dams for recreational and sporting purposes.
A pilot regulation will be applied in the Tavera Dam (Santiago) and replicated in the rest of the EGEHID facilities.
