One thing led to the other. A routine migration operation in Ciudad Juan Bosch was repelled by Patois-speaking men who threw stones at the Migration inspectors who sought to verify the legality of the documents of Haitians living there, following complaints by residents.
Subsequently, the Migration Agency returned in the early morning of the next day to the large housing complex built by the government, this time in a joint operation with members of the Armed Forces and the National Police and detained 385 undocumented Haitians, as reported on the DGMRD Instagram account.
The director general of Migration, Enrique Garcia issued a statement on Saturday, 21 May 2022, whereby he recommended that foreigners that are living illegally in the country voluntarily return to their country of origin and not look for problems here. The statement was issued in Dajabon, on the border with Haiti.
Garcia said the Dominican Republic will respect human rights but will not tolerate a violation of its laws and authority.
When asked about how many Haitians are deported on a weekly basis, the Migration Agency director said that the number varies, but it is generally in the thousands. At the time of the interview in Dajabon, the chief migration official was inspecting the construction of the concrete wall that is slowly going up along the border. News reports say the government at present is working on 700 meters are well under construction. The design will include concrete, razor wire, CCTV cameras, and various electronic sensors. The Dominican-Haitian border is said to be more than 380 km. Several rivers make up the border.
