Soccer referee, 32-year-old Raymundo Helpys Feliz is in much demand for local and international competitions. He has been named an assistant referee for the Qatar World Cup, 21 November to 18 December 2022. The announcement was made on 19 May 2022 by FIFA, the ruling body for international football.
This makes him a top athlete and puts him on the spot now that technology corroborates his right and wrong calls.
El Nuevo Diario tells his story. Feliz was a competitive swimmer; he played softball and university track and even basketball. Yet he never had competed in football when he was encouraged to take a first referee course in 2010.
El Nuevo Diario reports that after a successful local and international career, on Thursday, 19 May 2022, he learned he had been appointed to referee in the World Football Cup.
Feliz is one of 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials (VMOs) chosen in close cooperation with the six confederations. FIFA says the choice was based on the quality of performance at FIFA tournaments and at other international and domestic competitions in recent years.
