President Luis Abinader traveled to Switzerland where he will be getting positive feedback and a pat on the back for government successes in dealing with Covid-19 and economic recovery. On the homefront, he left his ministers participating in a new government program that sends ministers and government agency directors on the road to tell the people what the government is doing. This is to counteract local discontent over blackouts and recent police brutality crimes.
President Luis Abinader traveled on Friday to participate in a World Health Organization event and the Davis World Economic Forum. He traveled with Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez and other members of his staff.
In Geneva, he spoke at the 75th World Health Assembly on the good practices adopted by his government in the management of Covid-19 to reopen the Dominican Republic to the world. The Dominican Republic has a 0.75% lethality rate, one of the lowest in the Americas. Abinader said it was not luck, but listening to the experts.
He gave details on what the Dominican Republic did right to control Covid-19 and promptly restore the tourism industry and the economy to the point that 2022 is now a record year in performance. He spoke of the actions taken by public and private sector to early on secure vaccines for the people on the island, to make vaccinating easy, and the strong local recommendation for a third vaccine dose, well before it was standard procedure.
Next on President Abinader’s agenda in Switzerland is the Monday, 23 May bilateral meetings with important international business entities and participating in the dinner offered by Klaus Martin Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, to the heads of state and government, international organizations and special guests.
On Tuesday, 24 May, the President will participate in the press conference on the launching of the Travel and Tourism Development Index. Abinader is scheduled to return on Wednesday, 25 May.
