The Chamber of Deputies is dilly dallying with the request for interpretation of the director-general of the Police, Major General Eduardo Alberto Then regarding recent police brutality crimes. The legislators sent to the Technical Office of Legislative Review (Ofitrel) the request. The Ofitrel is a body of experts that has seven days to review the request for interpellation from a constitutional, legal, linguistic and formatting point of view. The request for interpellation of the head of the Police comes as a consequence of his failure to attend the invitation to stand for questioning on 9 May. Minister of Interior & Police Jesus Vasquez and Police Commissioner Jose de Vila represented the Police director.
Meanwhile, Listin Diario reports that the parents of the evangelic preacher, murdered in a still not clarified case dating back to 2021, alert there are strong powers in the Police. That case led to the removal of the Police chief at the time and the appointment of Then.
“There are strong powers in the Police, very great, but I am not going to stop because of that, nor am I going to stop speaking because of that, nor am I afraid to speak,” Marino Muñoz, father of murdered pastor Elisa Muñoz. In March 2021 she was shot to death along with her husband by policemen.
Muñoz does not cease to wonder why the person accused of orchestrating everything, violating the protocols of the institution, was part of the police force, was a working colonel and in charge of the Police Department of Villa Altagracia, even when he has a record of misdemeanors in the National Police.
In another story, Listin Diario reports on new videos showing a police officer abusing Richard Baez, who had accused the police of keeping RD$30,000 he had in cash when he was arrested.
