After days when it closed for the maintenance of the runway, the Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP) in La Union, Puerto Plata, is once again open to travelers. The north coast airport had been closed for about ten days to refurbish the main runway end safety area, and other areas at a cost of over US$4 million.
The work required the demolition of existing concrete slabs and the placing of new slabs and repaving large areas.
The work done on the runway end safety area, together with the other efforts, was aimed at extending the life of the runway, improving the ground conditions for the airplane landings and takeoffs and leveling out the concrete slabs in the middle of the runway.
Jet Blue was the first to fly in on Thursday, 18 May 2022 and was followed by flights from Canada, New Jersey, Miami, and Germany.
