Tamboril is a municipality in central Santiago province known for its fields of tobacco and tobacco plantations that can be seen from Duarte Highway. Now, the municipality wants to show off the farms and the people’s skills at making cigars to the world and is inviting to the Dominican Cigar Fest on 3, 4 and 5 June 2022.
“Dominican Cigar Fest” is organized by the Dominican Association of Cigar and Tobacco Producers (Adocitab) with the participation of famous brands of the tobacco and cigar industry that are located in Santiago province. Adocitab groups the largest number of tobacco-related companies in the Dominican Republic.
According to the organizers, the Tamboril-based Dominican Cigar Fest will be the first and largest exhibition to be held in the Dominican Republic, with 80 stands for companies linked to the cigar production chain, ranging from harvesters, processors, manufacturers of boxes, rings and cigars.
The organizers say that cigars and related products will be for sale at fair prices.
President Luis Abinader is expected to kick off the event. Other special guests are people linked to the industry, government officials and more than 250 international guests including baseball great, David Ortiz.
Radhamés Rodríguez, president of Adocitab, says that the event will turn Tamboril that week into the World Cigar Capital.
Francisco Matos, technical director of the association, explained that the tobacco industry contributed around RD$1.3 billion to the Dominican economy in 2021. The industry employs more than 150,000 people.
Robinson Díaz, executive director of the event, says activities begin on Friday, 3 June at 10am when the Cigar Monument will be inaugurated, then the Great Smoke 2022 will take place, in which 3,466 people will walk and smoke at the same time. The event seeks to set a new world record.
The intention of this fair is to position this municipality as the cigar capital of the world and to promote the quality of its tobacco. At the event, guests will be able to enjoy a wide variety of artistic and cultural activities. Scheduled for Friday, 3 June is the performance of Yiyo Sarante, Banda Real and Moa Cabrera & Orquesta. On Saturday, 4 June, on the program are Peña Suazo & La Banda Gorda, Rubby Perez, Joaquín Sánchez & Orquesta. And on Sunday, 5 June, the closing night, Sergio Vargas and El Chaval de la Bachata.
The program includes several awards for the best and most innovative in the industry.
The Dominican Association of Cigars and Tobacco (Adocitab), has an enrollment of 60 members in the municipality of Tamboril, where the fair will be held. There are about 325 cigar factories there, including a large percentage of informal ones.
