The Police director in Santiago, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, was replaced on 25 May 2022. The action follows weeks of an increase in crime in the province and controversial human rights violations by the Police themselves.

National Police director-general, Major General Eduardo Alberto Then appointed Brigadier General Claudio Gonzalez Mosquete as the new commander, replacing Brigadier General Ernesto Rodriguez Garcia. In Santiago for the positioning of the new regional commander, Major General Then delivered 12 new vehicles and 12 motorcycles for police patrols.

Santiago is experiencing a wave of crime. Diario Libre reports there have been 11 violent deaths that have been registered in sectors of the city in the last nine days. Neither the Police nor the Public Prosecutor’s Office have apprehended those responsible for these cases.
