Attorney General Miriam German Brito responded to claims of major corruption involving the police and military in jails nationwide, ordering her prosecutors to investigate
Attorney General ignored the claims of major corruption in the jails and justified the delays in the use of the La Parras (La Nueva Victoria) jail arguing that Las Parras is part of Operation Medusa, a major corruption case focusing on her predecessor, Jean Alain Rodriguez. She said the case is waiting for the audit carried out on the Attorney General Office underway by the Chamber of Accounts.
“If there is any evidence or indication that any person deprived of liberty has been the victim of a violation of his or her rights, an investigation shall be carried out immediately and action shall be taken in accordance with the results,” she stated in a press release issued by the Attorney General Office.
She reiterated that since the beginning of her administration it has been a priority to confront the illicit activities that take place inside the penitentiary.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Miriam German Brito, through a press release, emphasized that the overcrowding of the National Penitentiary of La Victoria will begin to be solved when the state finishes readapting the prison complex built in Las Parras, Guerra.
“We all have to be very clear, and the Executive Branch, through its advisor on the matter, has even told us that these works, which were inaugurated without being finished, had been overvalued and, in addition, they had to be duly readapted,” she said.
She stated that since the beginning of his administration, it has been a priority to confront illicit activities and indiscipline that take place inside the prisons, aware that these actions are a constant, gradual and multimodal task to dismantle structures that have been installed for decades in the system.
