Santiago has new police chief; Dominican saying: new brooms sweep better

For the past three weeks, the nation’s second-largest city Santiago de los Caballeros has experienced an uptick in crime with at least ten persons shot to death and assaults too numerous to count. As a result, the local National Police commander was replaced. The new commander, Brigade General Claudio González Moquete has entered the fray most visibly with major sweeps of the city’s barrios and random checkpoints along major thoroughfares.

Heavily armed police patrols in full riot gear can be seen moving about in the new trucks and motorcycles that accompanied the new commander in chief of the Central Cibao Police Directorate.

According to the first reports more than a dozen suspicious persons have been detained and several motorcycles allegedly stolen were recovered for investigation. Several vehicles were also taken for investigation.
