The documentary “Trujillo After Trujillo” was shown at the Unesco headquarters in Paris, France on Monday, 30 May 2022 as part of the 9th Edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Week. The documentary, produced by the audiovisual division at El Nuevo Diario newspaper, was first shown on Friday, 27 May in a presentation at the Presidential Palace in Santo Domingo.
The Trujillo documentary presents testimonies and facts on the regime compiled by the documentary’s director and scriptwriter, Juan Delancer. He interviewed leading historians Roberto Cassa, Mu-Kien Adriana Sang, Andres L. Mateo, Juan Daniel Balcácer, Wilfredo Lozano and Jose Miguel Soto Jiménez looking into the continuing impact of the dictator who was assassinated 61 years ago.
Delancer explains that the documentary “is a dialogue that progresses from an exposition on authoritarianism to what to do to eradicate it, while interweaving recreations on the dictatorship.” Remarks by President Luis Abinader are intertwined throughout, with his criteria on that period in Dominican history.
Nostalgia has kept alive would-be positives of the dictatorship. These are extolled by many including the young generations who did not experience the horrors of the Trujillo times. A grandson of the dictator, Luis José Ramfis Rafael Domínguez Trujillo, attempted to capitalize on the nostalgia and sought to be recognized by the Central Electoral Board (JCE). He actively campaigned in the country and abroad. He convinced many in the US that he would be a candidate, despite the Dominican Constitution not allowing dual nationals to be candidates to the presidency.
