Italy invites to celebrate Republic Day on 4 June

The Embassy of Italy is celebrating the Italian Republic Day with a cultural extravaganza for the whole family at the Fortaleza Ozama in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. The event is open to the general public from 4pm to 10pm on Saturday, 4 June 2022. The set up emulates Italian village festivities, and there will be dance, music and entertainment for all the family. Food and drinks will be for sale, provided by a selection of Italian restaurants in the Dominican Republic.

Ambassador Stefano Queirolo Palmas says the event is a way of celebrating the Italian national holiday with Italian families and their descendants, residents throughout the Dominican Republic, and those who wish to learn more about the Italian culture.

The gathering opens with a children’s show and an area for children to enjoy attractions and tastings of soft drinks, popcorn, Ferrero brand chocolates and cotton candy.

On the program is the performance by the Sergio Laccone Band, with Italian and Dominican musicians playing Italian songs fused with Dominican rhythms.

Also, thanks to the support of the Cinema Agency (DGCine), the classic Italian film “Divorzio all’Italiana” will be screened.

In addition, the Dominican Armada tall ship, named in honor of the Italian founder of the Dominican Navy and national hero of this country, “Admiral Juan Bautista Cambiaso,” will be anchored in the port of San Souci, within sight of the Ozama Fortress, as another attraction of this first meeting. The ship is open for visitations, too.

At 7pm, the Italian Ambassador, accompanied by his wife Ornella, and Dominican government authorities, will sing the hymns of both countries and render their speeches.

The Italian Embassy explains the bash is held as a celebration that goes beyond diplomatic protocol. It is a way to involve the Italian community living in the Dominican Republic to celebrate their roots and also to unite the Italian immigrant colonies of the oldest tradition (late 800s) and the immigrants of the last 20 years.

Admission is free. For those attending before 7pm, there will be a raffle for two weekends at the Eco Del Mar hotel in Bahia de las Aguilas, a weekend for a couple in Tracadero, excursions to the Saona and Catalina islands by Alamos Travel, baskets of Italian products from Dispensa Gourmet, Italian Market and Special Foods and other surprises.

ACEA Dominicana, Domicem, Diario Libre and Viva Wyndham Resorts are the sponsors of the event.

In Italy, Republic Day falls on 2 June and marks the day in 1946, after the end of World War II and the fall of fascism. At the time, the people of Italy voted to end the 85-year monarchy and ushered in a new age of freedom with the founding of the Italian republic.
