
Santiago is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. It is known as the capital of cigar production and a major manufacturing city in general. It is a university town, and a booming health city, attracting medical tourism. It is also known for its grass roots merengue and its carnival.
During the 25th Exposition for Tourism that took place Friday, 3 June 2022 in Santiago, Tourism Minister David Collado outlined the ministry’s plans to push Santiago de los Caballeros into the world of big-time tourism.
The government’s entire Tourism Cabinet and the top echelon of Minister Collado’s staff took part in the event’s opening ceremonies at the Gran Almirante Hotel.
In his short speech to the attending, Collado urged local leaders to produce a workable plan to position the Ciudad Corazon (The Heart of the Nation) as a tourism destination. The plan is to package the attractions for tour operators, with a focus on the hospitality of the population of Santiago is also known for.
As part of the push to bring Santiago into the realm of big-time Dominican tourism, Collado announced that the government would make available a budget of RD$50 million to promote the city.
