The Oncoserv cancer center in Santo Domingo becomes the first to offer CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery in the Dominican Republic, reports Altagracia Ortiz for Hoy.
The radiosurgery allows patients to lie comfortably on the procedure table without anesthesia while the robotic arm moves, without touching them, to treat all areas of the tumor. Recovery is often immediate, given its low risk of complications and damage to healthy tissue.
Cyberknife is described as more accurate than traditional radiation therapy. The Cyberknife can deliver radiation to a margin of one to five millimeters surrounding a tumor.
The CyberKnife M6 system treats the following cancers and other benign tumors:
Brain cancer (benign and malignant)
Head and neck cancer.
Liver cancer.
Lung cancer.
Pancreatic cancer.
Prostate cancer.
The innovative CyberKnife equipment is the only radiation administration system that has a linear accelerator mounted directly on a robot to administer the high-energy photons used in radiotherapy.
The new technology was presented by the medical center’s president, Dr. Luis Fernandez Coronado on Tuesday, 7 June 2022 during an event held in Santo Domingo.
Dr. Ámbar Pérez Fernández, director of the Radiosurgery Department at Oncoserv, highlighted the possibilities that open for the country with the use of this state of the art equipment. She mentioned its importance in treating malignant or benign tumors in the brain and spine.
