President Abinader visits SpaceX, meets President Biden; DR lobbies for Haiti in 9th Summit of the Americas

President Luis Abinader met US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the opening ceremony of the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, California,USA. The handshakes were a first, the conversations brief.

In the morning, Abinader visited Starlink (SpaceX) and said that the Elon Musk company would be investing in the Dominican Republic. That morning, he also participated in the panel with Costa Rica and Panama, the two other countries of the three-country regional block.

Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez participated in meetings during the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles where he lobbied for international action to deal with the security, economic and political crisis in Haiti. “Migratory issues are affecting all of the world,” he told journalists. Yet he highlighted: “We have a very particular situation because we share a small island and we feel the pressure from the Haitian side,” he said.

The position of the Dominican Republic at the Summit is to call for the international community to assist Haiti.

Accompanied by the Dominican Ambassador to the United States, Sonia Guzmán, President Luis Abinader asked the international community to move from theory to actions regarding the economic, political, social and security challenges in Haiti.

“They should stop making so many speeches, they should stop issuing so many opinions; there have been too many workshops. What they have to do is to act to bring peace to Haiti,” he said when approached by journalists in Los Angeles.
