President Abinader returns after personal encounters with Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau

President Luis Abinader returned on Saturday evening to Santo Domingo after a fruitful participation in the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, President Abinader had the opportunity to meet with US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada on Friday, 10 June.

To his credit, President Abinader was chosen to sit to the right of the host of the event, US President Joe Biden. To the left of the US President was Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, a one-two for the Caribbean in the gala event at Getty Villa.

The personal meetings with the head of state of the US is expected to better relationships between the two countries. The United States has yet to send an ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

The government of Canada reported it welcomes establishing a strategic partnership between Canada and the Alliance for Development in Democracy (Panama, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic) could help address key issues such as irregular migration, climate change, and economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

As reported on the meeting of Abinader with Prime Minister Trudeau, the two leaders discussed the importance of supporting Haitian-led solutions to restore stability in Haiti.

Trudeau tweeted on the meeting: “We spoke about our efforts to tackle climate change, create economic growth, and address food and energy security – as well as what more we can do to strengthen the relationship between Canada and the Dominican Republic.”
