This is embarrassing. A good part of the roof of the building that houses the offices of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA) collapsed on Friday, 10 June 2022 before 10pm. The CODIA groups the engineering experts of the country. No one was injured, yet most of the valuable documents housed in the building were buried under rubble.
The 16th Century building was remodeled in the early 20th Century.
According to a member of the CODIA executive board, the personnel of a construction project next door had been warned the works could affect the 16th Century edifice.
In a preliminary report issued late Saturday, technicians from the National Office for Seismic and Vulnerability Evaluations indicated that the construction of a “boutique” hotel right next door disturbed the nearly five-centuries-old footings of the former Casa de España, one of the oldest structures in the Colonial City.
One engineer explained to Diario Libre: “It is like you are leaning on a person and he suddenly steps away.” Apparently, the construction project did not take the necessary precautions to stabilize the older building.
