Deputies create new Matias Ramon Mella province

The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill that would create the new province Matias Ramon Mella. The bill now moves to the Senate for approval. The bill would not create new deputy positions or mayor positions. Nevertheless, the Senate would need to elect a new representative, bringing the number of senators to 33.

The province Matías Ramón Mella will be composed of the municipalities of Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte, Los Alcarrizos and Pedro Brand.

The province of Santo Domingo would keep Santo Domingo East, Boca Chica and Guerra.

The bill for the new Matias Ramon Mella province was first submitted by Deputy César Santiago (Tonty) Rutinel Domínguez in April 2021. In the Chamber of Deputies, it received the favorable vote of the 15 legislators that are members of the Permanent Committee of Municipal Affairs.

In the Chamber of Deputies, 134 of 178 legislators voted in favor. Deputies from the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and the opposition Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), People’s Force (FP) and the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) voted in favor.

This is the second time Santo Domingo is broken down into new political divisions. Previously, the National District was separated from Santo Domingo East, Boca Chica and Guerra. The National District continued as the capital city.
