Another tender for procurement made by the Ministry of Education is under investigation. The tender was for the purchase of digital text books for the 2022-2023 school year for RD$2.5 billion. Diario Libre reports on several irregularities in the tender. There is the complaint that the most expensive bids were the winners.
The procurement of the Ministry of Education has constantly made headlines for multiple irregularities since the appointment of Minister Roberto Furcal. Previously, Furcal was the presidential campaign manager for President Luis Abinader.
Diario Libre in the same 27 June edition reports on the weaknesses of remote learning programs implemented by the Ministry of Education as of 2020. The very costly TV audiovisuals developed during the pandemic year and presented on TV stations in 2020 and 2021. Findings are that these were only followed by 25% of the students to which they were targeted, Diario Libre reports.
