Senator Antonio Taveras (PRM-Santo Domingo) advocates for the application of the extinction of domain bill to crimes of illicit acquisition of assets. He argues against the legitimizing of assets obtained through drug trafficking or government corruption. But politicians want to limit the prosecution period. Taveras says the bill he proposes is the result of comprehensive study of the bill and how it is being applied in other Latin American countries. He proposes a special judge determine assets that fall under the illicit acquisition parameters. Others say if passed, the law would not pass the test of the Constitutional Court.
