Punta Cana is a world class sports tourism destination. During the pandemic, Punta Cana celebrated many bubble-type events and now the destination continues to host major sports events.
The Yamilet Peña Classic 2022 will take place at the Meliá in Punta Cana. Around 300 elite age group gymnasts will be competing from 11 to 14 August 2022.
Yamilet Peña, the Dominican athlete who placed 6th in the vault in the London Olympic Games in 2012 is organizing the event as part of activities of her Olympic Gymnastics Academy (OGA). Peña is still an elite athlete participating in major competitions of her sport. On 27 June 2022, she won gold in the Boliviarian Games taking place in Colombia, gathering 11 Latin American countries.
The Yamilet Peña Classic 2022 is the first world class gymnastics age group event ever carried out in the Dominican Republic. Children from 3 to 18 years old are participating. Competitors come from 10 countries – Puerto Rico, Mexico, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Aruba, Jamaica, Colombia, Dominican Republic and the United States.
