The director of the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD), Felipe Suberví announced that fiberglass sanitary sewer and potable water manholes will replace the present metal covers. Felipe Suberví expects the decision to resolve the historical problem of the theft of the covers.
The reinforced fiberglass covers will have capacity to support 40 tons. The theft of the street lids has caused multiple accidents to pedestrians and drivers.
A first order of 500 covers has been placed. These will be placed on the Expreso Quinto Centenario Avenue and on route to the Presidential Palace. Speaking at a press conference, Suberví said each cover costs about RD$11,000.
The official said the new covers are resistant to heavy traffic and have a security system to prevent them from being stolen.
