Felix Sanchez: Training the trainers in athletics

Two-time Dominican Republic Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez is slowly but surely creating the conditions for the Dominican Republic to become a world class power house in track and field.

In an interview with Hoy, the two-time Olympic gold 400m hurdles star now in charge of the Dominican Republic athletics program says efforts are focused on preparing a new generation of coaches and backing the emerging track stars. He made the remark after the Ministry of Sports said funds are available for building new tracks and repairing several around the country. The Ministry of Sports (Miderec) announced last week a millionaire investment in the repair of eight athletics tracks and the construction of another one in the community of La Higuera, El Seibo province.

Hoy reports that the country’s main track, that at the Felix Sánchez Olympic Stadium at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo and the warm-up track will also be repaired. Also the tracks in La Vega, Espaillat (Moca), Barahona and La Barranquita, Santiago.

Sanchez says the repairing of the tracks opens doors for the athletes to train in their provinces and not have to come to the capital city.

The country’s most important track and field event is the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Oregon from 15-24 July 2022.

Sanchez forecast the athletics team will deliver in the El Salvador Central American & Caribbean Games (23 June to 8 July 2023), and in the upcoming Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile (20 October to 5 November 2023).
