Natural gas storage tank construction advances; commercialization to start in 2023

Energía Natural Dominicana (Enadom) in partnership with AES Dominicana announced the tank roof air raising for the second natural gas storage tank under construction in Andrés, Boca Chica, a US$250 million investment. Commercial operation of the natural gas facility is set for 2023.

The raising is the most important step in the construction of a natural gas tank. The Dominican Republic Andres LNG Terminal Expansion project includes the installation of one LNG tank and expansion of the regasification facility with an annual capacity of 100 million tons to meet the rapidly increasing natural gas demand in the Dominican Republic.

The second storage tank is adjacent to the existing one at the AES Andrés generation park in Andrés, Boca Chica in eastern Santo Domingo.

Edwin De los Santos, executive director of Enadom, described the storage tank as a strategic investment for the country, Central America and the Caribbean. He said the additional storage capacity turns the Dominican Republic into a hub for the distribution of natural gas in the region in an efficient and competitive manner.

Speaking at the event, Energy and Mines Minister Antonio Almonte said the storage system will play an important role in the decarbonization of the economy, as well as providing greater efficiency for the production of each megawatt-hour. The second storage tank is an advance in the diversifying of the Dominican energy matrix. The construction of the tank is regarded as a benchmark for the security and energy transition of the Dominican Republic.

Korean contractor POSCO Engineering & Construction is the tank builder. The tank has a capacity to store 120,000 cubic meters. It increases the distribution capacity of regasified natural gas by 33% with the supplying of an additional 1,000 megawatts of natural gas power. The installation of the tank was begun in November 2020 and is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2023.

In addition to Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte, others attending the event were the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Víctor Bisonó; Rolando Gonzalez Bunster, representing InterEnergy, and Osvaldo Oller, partners at Energas, as well as Felix García and Manuel Estrella, partners at AES Dominicana.
Also in attendance were the executives of AES Corporation, Juan Ignacio Rubiolo, president of the Strategic International Business Unit of AES; Marcelo Aicardi, president for the Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean region, and Edwin De los Santos and Osvaldo Oller Bolaños, CEO and CFO, at Enadom, respectively.

Enadom was formed by the joining of the Energas and AES Dominicana groups and is oriented to the commercialization of liquid natural gas in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
