Deputies approve major change to professional licenses

Eduardo Hidalgo / Diario Libre

The Chamber of Deputies approved, after a process of urgency and two consecutive readings, major changes in the way that professional licenses will be granted. The bill still needs to be passed in the Senate.

Under the proposed legislation, all professional licenses, called exequaturs, will be issued by the Ministry of of Superior Education (Mescyt) rather than the different colleges and professional associations as established by law since 1842.

For example, the Dominican Association of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (Codia) is the entity that emits the exequatur for engineers and architects and surveyors to practice their professions. The same is true for the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) that currently issues the exequatur for doctors.
