Dominican Attorney General cautions on constitutional reform

Miriam German Brito, the current Attorney General of the Republic has issued a cautionary note regarding some proposed reforms to the Dominican Constitution. One such reform that has come to light is the creation of a Ministry of Justice, rather than the current Department of Justice.

The guest speaker at the luncheon sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce chapter in Santiago late last week, German Brito also touched on the much-discussed Extinction of Domain Bill (basically a law to cover government confiscation of ill-gotten assets), and noted that it needed to be reviewed “with a lot of caution.”

The distinguished jurist also predicted that the Constitutional Court would get a lot of cases after the law was enacted. She noted that her office needs more funds to prosecute corruption and organized crime.
