
The Dominican Republic honors the memory of Guillo Carías, the musician best known for promoting jazz in the Dominican Republic. This year, he had been decorated at the Presidential Palace. He was 86-years old. He passed away in a hospital in North Carolina, USA.
A native of San Juan de la Maguana, he was a trumpet player, composer and arranger. He lived in the United States for many years.
His artistic work was highly praised outside the Dominican Republic. In the DR he is remembered as one of the precursors of the jazz movement. In Puerto Rico, he was a professor at the Conservatory of Music.
The Santo Domingo Jazz Festival taking place at Casa de Teatro is dedicated to honoring his career. The festival closes with a performance by Divas en Jazz with Pirón Pérez, Sabrina Estepan, Maria del Mar and Gustavo Rodríguez Trio on Thursday, 28 July 2022.
