
In two consecutive readings, the Senate of the Republic approved the bill that declares Tobacco and the Dominican Cigar as Cultural Heritage of the Dominican Republic. The bill was submitted by the Executive Branch.
The bill emphasizes that the cultural heritage of the nation is under the safeguards of the state, which will guarantee its protection, enrichment, conservation, restoration and enhancement, and encouragement of the various artistic, cultural and popular manifestations at the national and international levels.
Article 64 of the 2015 Constitution establishes that the state shall recognize the value of cultural identity, individually and collectively, and its importance for comprehensive and sustainable development, economic growth, innovation and human well-being by supporting and disseminating scientific research and cultural works. The Constitution establishes that the state shall safeguard the nation’s tangible and intangible cultural property, ensuring its protection, improvement, conservation restoration and enhancement.
The Senate Plenary approved the bill with a vote of 22 out of 28 senators present. It now moves to the Presidency for enactment.
