The Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital, part of the Cecanot health city, serves a population of over a million people in the northern part of the capital city (barrio Maria Auxiliadora). It lies just a few blocks from the Horacio Vasquez Station on Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro, and is north of the 27 of February Expressway.
This hospital has been the center of controversy lately, given that the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) has accused the government of “privatizing” the medical center and installing a board made up of representatives from companies that are suppliers to the hospital.
Dr. Senen Caba has led a protest against would-be members of the volunteers of the center entrusted with overseeing the center and that of the newly renovated Luis Eduardo Aybar and Padre Billini public hospitals. The Luis Eduardo Aybar hospital director, world-renowned neuro-surgeon Jose Joaquin Puello, has reminded the CMD that there is a major difference between a board that oversees and assists with funding of the hospital and the privatization of the medical center. Dr. Caba is not against a board overseeing the hospital, But he has argued that there is a marked difference between a board of philanthropic women and one made up by representatives from the medicine sector clusters that profit from selling to the government hospitals.
At long last, the area for medical consultations at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Public Hospital is now open to the public. The Aybar, as it is known to the public, had been receiving patients at its new medical tower. The “official” opening and ribbon cutting was done last weekend in a ceremony headed by the head of the National Health Services (SeNaSa), Dr. Mario Lama, and Dr. Puello.
The Aybar currently offers consultations in 16 different medical specialties and will shortly reach 28 specialties. Physicians are receiving patients from 8am to 5pm.
