The Fuerza del Pueblo announced Dionis Sánchez would be the speaker for the People’s Force in the Senate and Omar Fernandez, would be the speaker in the Chamber of Deputies.
The People’s Force is the party that three-time President Leonel Fernandez founded to run for President in the 2020 presidential election. At the time, he argued the PLD had rigged the computers to choose former Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo as the presidential candidate.
Omar Fernández is the son of the former President.
The speakers need to be elected in time for the next legislative session that opens on 16 August 2022.
The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) had already announced that it would continue with Yvan Lorenzo (PLD-Elias Piña) as speaker for the party in the Senate. The PLD chose Juan Julio Campos (PLD-La Altagracia) to replace Gustavo Sánchez (PLD-National District) as speaker in the Chamber of Deputies.
The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) has yet to announce its speakers in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. The party authorities said they will meet on Thursday, 11 August 2022 to decide.
An editorial in Diario Libre explains that six legislators aspire to preside the Senate for the PRM, including incumbent Eduardo Estrella (of the Dominicanos por el Cambio independent party). The editorial makes a point of the damage giving politics the upper hand could bring.
