DR1 breaks for the 16 August holiday

DR1 News will not be updated on Tuesday, 16 August 2022, a national holiday. The holiday celebrates the Restoration of the Republic marking the start of the guerilla war for the restoring of Dominican sovereignty after 17 years of Spanish recolonization. Dominican nationalists waged a guerilla war between 1863 and 1865. On 16 August 1863, a new group under the leadership of Santiago Rodríguez made a daring raid on Capotillo near Dajabón and raised the new Dominican flag on the Capotillo hill. This action, known as El grito de Capotillo, and marked the beginning of the war that led to the restoration of independence.

This year, the 16 August holiday coincides with the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Virgen de la Altagracia, the Dominican mother and protector virgin.
