President Luis Abinader confirmed Central Bank Governor Hector Valdez Albizu’s position for another two years. Decree 442-22 ratified the economist in the position. Valdez Albizu is the longest-standing Central Bank governor, with 30 years in the post.
Valdez Albizu has served as governor of the Central Bank under the presidencies of Joaquin Balaguer, Leonel Fernandez, Danilo Medina and Luis Abinader.
He was first named to the position under the government of late President Joaquin Balaguer on 31 August 1994. He was confirmed in the position in August 1996 during the first term of then President Leonel Fernandez until 2000. He did not serve during the government of former President Hipolito Mejia (2000-2004). When Leonel Fernandez returned to the Presidency in 2004, he again named Valdez Albizu to the position through August 2000. Valdez Albizu was ratified in the position again by Fernandez’s successor, former President Danilo Medina (2012-2020).
