The Special Justice of the Peace Court in Transit of the Judicial District of Santiago issued two months of preventive detention against the driver of the vehicle that last week crashed and killed 16-year old Imanol Mercado Cruz when he was on his way to practice at a Santiago city baseball academy.
According to one of the defense lawyers of the victim’s family, the accused, 32-year old Eduardo Enrique Guzman Valdez, had already accumulated several traffic violation fines in Santiago. Guzman Valdez was driving a black Porsche.
The late MLB baseball prospect was the only son of journalist Mirian Cruz Garcia and Manuel Mercado.
Guzman Valdez is accused of running over the 16-year old when he sped out of a gas station in a hit-and-run case. Guzman Valdez was ordered to serve the preventive custody in the Rafey Jail in Santiago. Guzman Valdez turned himself in about 24 hours after running over the youth.
