The defense of former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez, in jail at Najayo accused of significant corruption during the Medina administration, protests that his former right hand at the Attorney General Office, Rafael Stefano Canó Sacco is getting privileged treatment from the Public Prosecutors Office.
Canó Sacco left the country and, while in Spain, became the key witness assisting in compiling evidence against Rodriguez.
Rodríguez’s defense lawyers say Canó Sacco was who negotiated the deals that are now being singled out as corruption. The defense say that Canó Sacco should be tried. The former attorney general defense says that Canó Saco received RD$645 million in bribes in the Medusa Case.
Defense lawyers Carlos Balcácer, Gustavo Biaggi Pumarol and Francisco Franco argue that Canó Sacco had a network of close friends, relatives and people to whom he promised procurement for a return of 20% on the contracts. The defense said in the pre-trial hearing that it is absurd and improper that Canó Sacco is allowed to speak by videoconference, and that he has been excluded from the accusatory file. The lawyers say he should be extradited to stand trial in the Dominican Republic.
Jean Alain Rodríguez was named director of the Center for Export and Investment (2012-2016) when President Danilo Medina started his first government in August 2012. Canó Sacco was part of his team at the CEI-RD. When Rodríguez was appointed to the Attorney General Office in 2016, Canó Sacco moved to the Attorney General Office.
