President Luis Abinader announced the formal start of the expansion of the Barrera de Salinidad Aqueduct. The drinking water project is expected to benefit an estimated 1.8 million people that live in Santo Domingo East and Santo Domingo North municipalities. The expansion will increase the drinking water system capacity to produce more than 136.22 million gallons of water per day
The general director of the Santo Domingo Water Corporation (CAASD), engineer Felipe Suberví explained the Development Bank of Latin America (former CAF) is providing the financing for the US$97 million drinking water system improvements. The Dominican government is adding US$45 million.
Suberví explained the government has been gradually expanding the drinking water production capacity of the facility. “We found this aqueduct producing 1.8 cubic meters of water per second, today it produces 2.5, and we are going to reestablish the 4 cubic meters in this first stage and with the expansion we will take it to produce 6 cubic meters of water per second by mid-2024, which indicates that more than 136.22 million gallons of water will be served per day,” the official explained.
