Former DNCD sent to pretrial custody at Najayo for murder

The former president of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), 59-year old Felix Alburquerque Comprés was sent to a year of preventive custody at the Najayo-Men jail for the death of the sports communicator Manuel Taveras Duncan.

Judge of Permanent Attention of the National District, Juan Francisco Rodríguez Consoró accepted the request for preventive custody to be remanded made by the defense of the victim’s family and by prosecutors from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the National District.

Upon leaving the hearing, Ingrid Hidalgo, lawyer of the retired Navy vice admiral, described the judge order as “imprudent.” She said her client will not be safe in an ordinary prison. She says in that jail there are drug prisoners who were sentenced during the administration of Alburquerque Comprés. Alburquerque Compres was appointed by former President Danilo Medina in January 2019 and was replaced with the change of government in August 2020.

Esther Taveras Duncan, accompanied by her mother in a wheelchair, and a brother, said that the preventive imprisonment of the man accused of shooting her brother was the only thing that would prevent him from escaping the judicial process against him.

Present for the hearing was the prosecutor of the National District, Rosalba Ramos.

Taveras Duncan and Alburquerque Compres had a quarrel in the early morning of 19 August in a fast-food stand on Rómulo Betancourt corner Núñez de Cáceres. Taveras Duncan ran north up the Núñez de Cáceres to hide at a betting shop stand, when Alburquerque Compres headed for his vehicle and returned with a gun.

As reported, Alburquerque Compres fired several shots but did not injure anyone at the stand. The prosecutor file says that Alburquerque Compres fired shots that were not from his authorized gun.

A surveillance video shows that Alburquerque Compres went in pursuit of Taveras Duncan and ended up shooting him next to the betting shop. The video shows the former DNCD man fired a second shot into Taveras Duncan’s back, when he was immobilized on the pavement by a first shot.
