It was about time. Residents in the capital city will soon be getting newly paved sidewalks. Right now, walking can be tasking and tripping is easy, given the dire state of many sidewalks in Santo Domingo in the National District.
President Luis Abinader and Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascención announced sidewalks improvements for RD$468 million in the 1, 2 and 3 districts of the National District. The budget will also be used to pave potholes in many streets.
The Presidency announced street and sidewalks improvements are coming for the neighborhoods of Los Girasoles, Los Ríos, Estadio Olímpico, Ciudad Universitaria, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill avenues; Espaillat neighborhood, Mejoramiento Social, San Carlos, El Millón, San Miguel, Mirador Sur, Palma Real, Las Palmas and the barrios Alfimar and El Cacique.
The plan, which will be developed by the National District Council (ADN), the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) and the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), will have a total investment of 468,904,734 pesos and will impact 328 streets in three districts of the Dominican capital.
It is expected to cover 167,327 square meters of sidewalks and 75,267 linear meters of curbs.
“This is the most extraordinary project for the renovation of the neighborhoods of the capital, which includes the repair and construction of sidewalks, curbs and gutters and the paving of the main streets and avenues,” said Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascención.
For the first district, the plan will cover 74,242 square meters of sidewalks and 26,459 square meters of linear curbs, with an investment of RD$196,292,691. A total of 116 streets will be intervened and 40 sectors will benefit.
Meanwhile, for district two the plan will cover 67,177 square meters of sidewalks and 40,011 linear meters of curbs, with an investment of RD$205,488,894. A total of 159 streets will be intervened and 24 sectors will benefit.
Finally, in the third district the plan contemplates 25,906 square meters of sidewalks and 8,795 linear meters of curbs, with an investment of RD$67,123,148. 55 streets will be intervened and 15 sectors will benefit.
The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party controls the National District government and that of the Santo Domingo province, too. The works will be completed coinciding with the launching in late 2023 of the re-election campaign for President Luis Abinader. Carolina Mejía, city mayor, could also run for reelection.
