In 2015, the Houston Astros signed young Framber Valdez in the international draft. They paid just US$10,000. In 2021 Valdez started 22 games for the Houston Astros, and ended the season with an Earned-Run-Average (ERA) of just 3.14. Opposing teams batted only .220 against his pitches.
Last week, playing against the Texas Rangers, Valdez had his 22nd “quality start” with still four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Valdez is from Palenque, in the province of San Cristobal, a province that already has a Dominican Hall of Famer in Vladimir Guerrero.
At 28, Framber Valdez is on the cusp of signing a really huge contract. He is currently the number five pitcher in all of the American League with an ERA of just 2.63 runs per game and is in the running for a Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the league. All this from a young man that cost the Houston Astros just US$10,000 to sign.
