12 cases of monkeypox so far


As of Wednesday, 7 September 2022, there are 12 cases of monkeypox. The most recent. Cases are those of a 28-year old man living in San Cristóbal and a 27-year old woman living in the National District. Both were allowed to receive care at home. This is the first case of a woman confirmed to be infected with the disease.

Another man, of Haitian nationality, is in isolation at the Ramón de Lara Military Hospital, where all the first cases were taken.

The Ministry of Public Health says other cases are under observation and could be confirmed.

The first case of monkeypox in the Dominican Republic was reported on 6 July 2022, a 25-year old man who had traveled to the DR from the United States where he had caught the disease.

The symptoms of the disease are similar to those of the eradicated smallpox, although somewhat milder, such as fever, headache, tiredness and chills. Health authorities calls to the population to not be alarmed and to follow the prevention recommendations.
