Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz Lopez announced during a press conference last week that farm production has doubled in some areas and that the most basic of foods are witnessing a price reduction.
Prices of eggs, plantains poultry, potatoes, rice and beans are all dropping. The process has not been fast, but that is because each sector has its rhythm and it takes time, money and a lot of energy to ramp up production, said the farm minister.
He noted that in production has doubled in areas under “controlled environments.” Production of greenhouse vegetables have gone from 12 million pounds a month to 25 million pounds a month.
Production of veggies such as carrots and potatoes are up over 7% from the last harvest, plantains are up nearly 12%, and poultry is at 20 million chickens a month. According to the minister, a large part of this success can be attributed to the government’s program of subsidies for specific items such as fertilizers, and the import of flour and corn.
