The Dominican aviation sector met on 12 September 2022 to address the common goal of developing the country into an Air Hub, or regional distribution center. The object is to strengthen the aviation sector.
On Monday, 12 September 2022, President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado met with the top executives of airlines and airports. During the meeting, the head of state showed the government’s interest in strengthening Dominican aviation to achieve a reduction in airfares.
During the meeting, issues related to the facilities to be granted by the government for Dominican airlines to establish their operations centers in the country were discussed. The airlines spoke of their commitments to the increase of tourism with the sale of low-cost tickets.
The meeting also addressed the issue of facilities for airport service providers to guarantee airline operations.
Officials from the government’s aviation, airport, aeronautical and financial sectors attended the meeting.
The executives discussed the advances in the amendment to the aviation treaty with the United States. The present aviation treaty limits the number of cities Dominican airlines can fly to. US airlines have no limits. There are discussions ongoing for bettering the conditions for the Dominican airlines to compete with major airlines, given the strong support the US government awards to its airlines.
