
The Dominican Republic has set a new record in air arrivals — 621,953 foreigners in August 2022. This is 124,563 more tourists than in pre-pandemic August 2019.
In making the announcement, President Luis Abinader stressed that the tourism industry “is better than ever.”
Add to these numbers the 94,792 cruise passengers, and the total of tourism arrivals in August was 716,745 visitors.
Tourism Minister Collado reported that from January to August 2022 the country has received 4,904,162 air-arriving tourists plus 755,818 maritime tourists for a total 5,655,980, a new record.
Of the 621,953 visitors in August, 502,289 were foreigners and 119,674 were Dominicans who live abroad.
Foreign arrivals in August represent a growth of 27% compared to 2019 and 11% compared to 2018.
Visiting Dominican expats registered an increase of 18% in August 2022 when compared to August 2019 and 39% compared to August 2018.
The Ministry of Tourism also highlighted the increasing investment in more capacity and complementary attractions for the sector. Tourism is regarded as key to the rapid recovery and resilience of the Dominican Republic following the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
